Can't get HSI: street to house line bad?

My cable modem just keeps flashing. I called tech support and a guy came over to run some tests. He says the line in the house passes for regular cable, and digital cable...but NOT HSI. Same for the line outside going to the home. However, the feed at the street box checks out OK for all three.

Bottom line, he thinks that water has gotten into the underground line from the street to the house. Does this make sense? Shouldn't digital cable be bad if HSI isn't supported on the cable? Regular cable has good visual quality. They want to re-do the cable going to the house which potentially could wreak havoc with my invisible dog fence and my sprinkler system since I don't know where the pipe/lines run!

They are probably not going to go very deep. You should be able to find your invisible fence very easy. Borrow the dogs collar and see where it activates. Hopefully you have an led to indicate activation. The water sprinkler is normally much deeper than the cable they will bury. But one question has your HSI worked properly before this?

This is a first time set up for me and the previous owner had not had HSI. I guess I was under the impression that if digital cable works, HSI should too, since they are both broadband. The house is relatively new too (built 1996). The other bad thing is that the subcontractor doing the line work is backlogged so it may take some time. Cox seems to respond very very quickly to service needs here in Cleveland, OH. They even came the same day I called and it was a Sunday!

I would not worry how long it takes. Just the fact they are willing to do the work is great. Let us know the outcome.

Good luck,
Lars

Normally if the cable has been contaminated you'll see degradation across the spectrum. Have you checked to see if there are any splitters inside the house that may be preventing it from working? Have you hooked the line coming into the house direct to the modem? I am curious if he used any test equipment to verify the cable.

Don't worry about the sprinkler lines.

Before they dig, they will have the local utilities come and mark any buried water/electric lines.

I wouldn't worry about the sprinkler lines either, but Ms. Utility has never marked by sprinkler lines in the past. They mark the primary lines and that is all, stuff I installed is my responsibility as not considered part of the utilities. Do they mark underground owner installed lines in your neck of the woods. He may want to check with his local utility company to confirm if he is worried about it.

Good call hank.
I really have no idea whether they mark owner installed lines since I don't have any.

update

Yeah, The modem was plugged in right where the underground cable meets the house: no good. He initially changed an old splitter, and I was hoping that that would cure things. But when it didn't, he just went up the chain.

NEWS: I was doing some cleaning in the yard when I came across another cable box hidden by surrounding bushes. This is on the same side of the house that the cable connections to the house are on. The tech was looking at the other cable box that is easy to see that borders my other neighbor on the other side of the house.

I think the tech took the filter off my neighbors box, got good signals from there but didn't from my house because my cable box still has the filter! I called Cox today to explain this theory and another visit is planned on Wed. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all the replies.

Cox made a mistake

Sure enough, the tech came by today and opened my street box to find the filter still there. Once removed, the internet was working flawlessly.

Thank goodness the cable line people did not come to run a line from my neighbors box, around behind my house, to the other side of the house, like the original tech was saying needed to be done!
