An Overview of Disney Springs

The area that is now Disney Springs has a long history. In 1975, it opened as the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, in the section now known as the Marketplace area of Disney Springs. In the 1980s, the name was changed to the Disney Village Marketplace, with an expansion that included the famous Pleasure Island section (now The Landing area). After that, the complex was renamed Downtown Disney, which was the name through 2015 when it became known as Disney Springs.

The Backstory to the Area

Disney Springs is divided into four different areas: Marketplace, The Landing, Town Center, and West Side. And, as with everything Disney, there’s plenty of storytelling involved with the project. Walt Disney Imagineering Portfolio Creative Executive Theron Skees told D23 that the Imagineers traveled around Florida to come up with the story for Disney Springs. “Every neighborhood represents a different era of time, and it kind of represents a different architectural time period or genre that took place in Florida,” Skees explained to D23.

The Town Center serves as the main entrance to Disney Springs. The backstory is that Town Center is located around a series of natural springs, which first drew in settlers to the fictional Disney Springs area. As part of this story, The Landing served as the town’s transportation hub, as it’s the site of the marina, bottling company, and train station. Then there’s the Marketplace, which “dates back to the 1930s and 1940s,” as shared by D23. Then there’s the West Side, which is more modern.
