[RI] Packet Loss issue

Modem was replaced from motorola (SB5120) to (SB5101u).
The signal was a little off but the coax wire was replaced and a new 3 way splitter was put in at the main line.
Used to have 2 way splitters that were removed which was splitting the internet twice instead of once.
Signals are very steady now so I thought the problem would of vanished but I was wrong.
No router is involved..
3rd tech coming tomorrow..this problem has been going on for about 2 months now--used to be only 1 percent packet loss so I figured it would go away and now its just a rapid issue..
I'm in the providence area (02909) to be exact near broadway..anyone else with this issue?

So far a list of replacements:
-modem
-splitter(s)
-coax wiring
-outside wiring from house to street (by cox)
-3 different ethernet cables
-2 NIC cards and onboard
-outlets switched for modem power made no difference (obviously was just a ballpark idea)

again this will be the 3rd visit from cox..all replies welcomed [RI] Packet Loss issue - Cox (4)

FYI, if you post the images directly on this site, it will automatically resize them and make thumbnails for large images. Another advantage of direct posting is you never have to worry about the external image disappearing.

No problem. We have buttons all over the place and it can be a little daunting.

Welcome and good luck resolving your issue.

Yea I'm used to the paperclip attachment icon--which ironically shows up on the topic header left side of it lol.

Glad to be here--except the problem part :P

Way too many Ethernet active/dormant events in those modem logs. Have you tried different Ethernet cables or connecting different devices to the modem to see if you still have problems?

Yes 3 ethernet cables all same results...what do u mean by different devices? I only have one computer and its direct connection..tried onboard/ 2 nic cards also--same results (even tcp/ip tweaks/windows defaults) whole nine yards. Same results in safe mode w/networking.
This is also a brand new modem.

You could maybe try updating the drivers on the PC but that pattern of log entries suggests a failed Ethernet connection between the modem and connected device. Do you have access to a laptop or something you could try connecting to the modem?

Well I do have a cox tech coming today (3rd trip) do they carry laptops? Yea I figured it looks like a bad connection through modem to desktop but 3 different nic's and 3 different ethernet cables and still same results makes me scratch my head--unless somehow the motherboard itself is dying..but no other problems have been occurring.

Also the packet loss doesn't occur in the morning--seems to be during rush hour in the evening when everyone is coming home..

The thing to note about Ethernet events is they have nothing to do with the Internet connection. They simply indicate a loss of connectivity between the modem and whatever device is connected. It's possible that you have an out of box defect modem. Are your two NICs in the PC onboard? If so, have you tried an add on card instead?

That's all pretty much normal log noise during a reboot cycle but when you start seeing lots of Ethernet link up and Ethernet link dormant events outside of the modem rebooting there is definitely a problem.

Nothing to do with the node. The Ethernet connection stops at the modem.

Ok thank you for your input--should I request a docsis 3 modem? Should It cost me anything? This 2nd modem was free to my knowledge--I'm on 25/5 plan. Not sure what the 3rd tech is bringing in regards to laptop to test on and/or another modem..

Cox technicians carry laptops with them which allows them to access our internal network giving them access to diagnostic tools and account information but they can try connecting them to modems for troubleshooting purposes. There are many benefits to getting a 3.0 modem but that would be an upgrade the customer is responsible for purchasing if desired. If the current modem came from us and is still under warranty it would be replaced with a comparable modem.

I would keep an eye on packet loss to that address and note any issues you see.

Been monitoring it 4 hours--theres been regular packet loss within the 6 hops to cox.net still also (usually 1 percent packet loss atm)--while 192.... goes steady with 1 packet trace back and forth with a max of 4.

If you have any trace routes showing that it might be helpful. At first glance that doesn't sound like it may be packet loss.

Do you have a ping running to 192.168.100.1 running at the same time as that post?

I'll admit that makes no sense at all when compared with the modem logs you posted.
