I love a good story. In the business world, a well told story can help people to understand your point...It can help build support for your idea or it can help people understand how to implement your suggestion. However, a poorly told story can cause minds to wonder and you loose your impact. Think about stories you have told. Were they powerful? #storytelling #leadership

Can you really manage and coach at the same time?I first read and shared this article about 6 years ago. I personally find it hard to manage and coach at the same time. When you are focusing on being the manager, you tend to move quick and give direction. True coaching is the art of developing the best in someone else. Only after building a relationship of trust am I able to blend managing and coaching. Are you able to mix them up effectively?

Gratitude Culture vs. Blame CultureWhen under stress, it is very easy to revert to our most negative self. If it takes 5 positive interactions to offset 1 negative interaction, how many nice things do you need to say to offset one bad moment?Spread more gratitude and joy so you are prepared for a bad day.

How to make a good checklistAlways remember a good checklist is not a substitute for training. They are simple tools designed to reinforce the skills of expert professional. I have helped develop checklists that were supposed to prevent the inexperienced from making mistakes. Now I realize why they didn’t work. #keeleyu

Are you really asking questions? After our recent Keeley U book study featuring The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stainer I have been paying more attention to the way we ask questions.Have you heard the phrase “There are no dumb questions”?People avoid asking questions because they fear looking dumb.I’ve noticed a lot of questions in business settings are phrased as a statement with just a little voice inflection at the end.Why do people ask questions by making a statement? Here is what I am seeing.Business meetings are quick, and people with answers get promoted. This leads to questions phrased as statements.Lack of real questions leads to short discussions.Short discussions lead to poorly thought-out solutions.Poorly thought out solutions lead to poor execution plans.Poor execution plans lead to more meetings where we need to ask more questions.Since people learn to fear questions, and they want to look smart, they ask questions in the form of a statement. As leaders, we need to ask real questions!Stay curious a bit longer.Ask real questions.Keep the discussion going just a bit longer.A team that asks good questions, explores thoughts and ideas a little bit longer and develops better solutions.#coaching #people #team

Getting started on my first #KeeleyU book study. I first read The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier about four years ago. It is an easy read with powerful content. #coaching
